Why Borage oil?
Dear Doctor,

Often times you suggest users to supplement with vitamin c, msm and borage oil. Although I know the first two are the building blocks of skin, but why the borage oil?

Thanks.

I wanted to ask you more or less the same question, also because many studies (I don't know how trustworthy they are, consider that I'm totally incompetent) point out that it is dangerous to assume some omega 6 (as borage oil) without any omega 3.
Many thanks, Anna maria

Dr. Pickart
Borage oil is like a strong primrose oil but costs much less. The key ingredient is gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which is needed for critical reactions within the body. Numerous studies have found both oils to improve skin health. As we age, the ability to produce GLA within the body declines sharply.

Also, helpful for skin is flaxseed oil. Some are of the opinion that flaxseed oil is better than oils with GLA but there are more published studies on the GLA fats improving skin health.

As for supplements, you might take:

1 gram borage oil
1 gram flaxseed oil
3 grams salmon oil

But the is no exact number - see what works for yourself.
