Whats everyone’s thoughts on this supplement?

I see it has studies behind it but they used ultrasound scanning to see how it improved the skins deeper layers and particularly the dermis. I don’t know whether ultrasound scanning is particularly important in revealing skin health or improvements.

The company says there was a study carried out by a Danish dermatologist, Dr Marianne Kieffer, who performed a year long clinical study on the effects of Imedeen on 144 women aged 35-50. The study showed that at the end that a significant improvement was shown in all the tests including ultrasound scanning.

The supplement is advertised quite a bit in the UK, and claims that it helps the dermis and improves skin structure and texture as well as improving the skins natural ability to retain moisture. They even say that it can help visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dilated capillaries and age spots whilst also improving the skin’s overall quality and moisture balance.

All the products in the IMEDEEN® portfolio are composed of natural-based ingredients.
The ingredients have been specially selected for their beneficial effects on skin, including moisture enhancement and skin building properties, anti-oxidant defence and soothing, calming agents.

The ingredients vary in each of our product lines. Not all ingredients are included in all products.

1. Skin structuring and moisture building
Biomarine ComplexTM
At the heart of IMEDEEN’S anti-ageing skin range is the exclusive Biomarine ComplexTM, which is rich in proteins and polysaccharides similar to those naturally found in the skin’s supporting tissue which is important for skin structure and moisture.

2. Skin structuring

Vitamin C
Essential in the formation of collagen, which is a primary structural protein in the skin.

Soy extract
Soy extract has a natural content of isoflavones, which has structural similarities to human elements important for maintaining skin collagen.

Zinc
Essential element in many enzymatic processes - contributes to the integrity of the epidermis.

3. Anti-oxidant

Lycophence GSTM
Powerful skin defence system consisting of two potent anti-oxidants, tomato extract and grape seed extract.

Tomato extract
A natural source of lycopene, which contributes to protection against UV-induced oxidative skin damage.

Grape seed extract
Contains anti-oxidant compounds called oligomeric procyanidins which help protect against UV-induced oxidative skin damage

ViTea TM
An advanced protection complex providing white tea extract, vitamin E, vitamin C, tomato extract, and grape seed extract.

Vitamin E
Essential nutrient and natural anti-oxidant.

White tea
Made from the first leaves and buds of the Camelia Synensis plant - renowned for its potent anti-oxidant effect.

Palm fruit extract
Balanced mixture of natural carotenoids from the fruit of the African oil palm. Carotenoids are plant pigments with anti-oxidant effects.

4. Calming
Chamomile
Extracted from Matricaria Recutita, chamomile is widely used in skincare products for its calming and soothing effect.

Now I don’t know enough about skincare to see if there are loop holes in this… so am hoping that either Dr Pickart or Skin Bio might be able to share their views on this supplement.
This is some blurb from their website about the studies done:

IMEDEEN ClassicTM - CLINICAL STUDIES

DR F HEULE – THE NETHERLANDS
Dr F Heule, Professor of Dermatology at the Academic Hospital in Rotterdam, performed a twelve week double-blind placebo-controlled study on the effects of IMEDEEN on 46 women, aged between 40-65, all of whom had mild to moderate signs of photo-ageing. At the end of the period, Dr Heule observed that a number of parameters, including wrinkles, skin texture and dilated capillaries had improved significantly in the women taking IMEDEEN. Objective measurements on this group also showed an increase in skin thickness. Dr Heule concluded that IMEDEEN has a beneficial effect on signs of photo-ageing after twelve weeks of use

DR MARIANNE KIEFFER – DENMARK
The Danish dermatologist, Dr Marianne Kieffer, carried out a year long clinical study on the effects IMEDEEN on 144 women, aged between 35-50, all of whom had mild to moderate signs of photo-ageing. At the end of the study, a statistically significant improvement was shown in all the objective measuring tests, leading Dr Kieffer to conclude that IMEDEEN is active in the dermis where it improves basic skin structure and texture, as well as the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture. Over time, IMEDEEN can also help visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dilated capillaries and age spots, whilst improving the skin’s moisture balance.

“The concept of being able to improve the condition of the skin from within, instead of having to rely on skin creams, is both novel and logical. I like the idea that the skin cells are being nourished from the inside.”
DR MARIANNE KIEFFER

Does no one have any opinions on this please? Even possible faults with the study or why they are not credible?

Probably any supplement program would have some positive actions.

Just take MSM, glucosamine, vitamin C, primrose or borage oil, and various antioxidants such as leutin, lycopene, vitamin E, and tocotrienols and you should get skin improvement.
