If you're like me, you love the healthy glow of the sun as it tans your skin. But perhaps you ask: Is tanning really safe? We hear so much these days about sunlight yet, why is it that we feel so happy in the sun? How can something that feels so good be bad for your health? It is true that if you overdo the sun without applying SPF sunscreens you may harm and age your skin without reaping health benefits of the sun.

So what is the key to obtaining sun health and a beautiful tan? Moderate sun exposure is the key. Sun for fifteen to twenty minutes in the morning (before 10 am) or late afternoon (after 4 pm).

A certain amount of sunlight is necessary for good health, but over exposure may produce skin damage, wrinkling, and other unwanted effects. Skin tanning and sun damage are not the same. Tanning (melanin production) is good, but the goal is to avoid sun damage.
Products with pure titanium dioxide which blocks ultraviolet rays reduce the intensity of sun exposure. Biological oils such as squalane also help protect your skin from dryness and supply needed moisturization.

Why do People Suntan?

The most common reason given for suntanning is that time in the sun brings a psychological feeling, often intense, of well being and relaxation. The physical warmth of the sun's rays is also very pleasant. After becoming more tan, most people feel better about themselves. These are deep psychological feelings and seem to be part of our genetic response to sunlight. People suntan for a variety of reasons - to enhance physical beauty and sexual attractiveness, for mood elevation, and to counter depression.
How Much Sunlight is Needed?
Studies have found that 20 to 30 minutes per day supplies the required amount of vitamin D. On the other hand, persons afflicted with depression from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) often need several hours of full spectrum lighting to alleviate depression.
However children are very sensitive to light. They should not be exposed for more than 10 minutes, and infants should never be exposed to intense sunlight at all.
