TOXIC PEPTIDES vs HEALTHY PEPTIDES: What's the Difference?

The use of the word "peptide" in cosmetic ingredients has taken on a meaning of its own as countless cosmetic companies strive to market their products as science-based cosmeceuticals that can do more than just make the skin temporarily look better.

But what is the difference between peptides used in many so-called anti-aging creams/serums and the peptides invented by biochemist Dr. Loren Pickart? Let's review a few important differences.

First of all, it is important to note that not all peptides are safe. Many peptides are actually toxic. Simply put, a peptide is made up of chains of amino acids that are linked together in a defined order. Usage and efficacy depends on what the peptide consists of and proven evidence of safety.

In fact, it is essential that any peptide used to create a copper peptide have long term evidence of safety. Many toxic peptides act rapidly. But the danger can lie in the long term use of even very mildly toxic peptides that have no evidence of long term safety. See the following important study:

Peptides are fragments of proteins with significant biological activities. These peptides are encoded in the protein sequence. Initially, such peptides are inactive in their parental form, unless proteolytic enzymes are released. These peptides exhibit various functions and play a therapeutic role in the body. Besides the therapeutic and physiological activities of peptides, the main purpose of this study was to highlight the safety aspects of peptides. We performed an organized toxicity and search of available literature using PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, EMBASE, Reaxys and Scopus databases. All the relevant citations including research and review articles about the toxicity of biologically active peptides were evaluated and gathered in this study. Biological peptides are widely used in the daily routine ranging from food production to the cosmetics industry and also they have a beneficial role in the treatment and prevention of different diseases. These peptides are manufactured by both chemical and biotechnological techniques, which show negligible toxicity, however, some naturally occurring peptides and enzymes may induce high toxicity.


What to Use Instead: Healthy peptides are proven peptides. For example, the use of GHK-Cu (1st generation copper peptide originally discovered by Dr. Loren Pickart) has been intensively studied.

No negative effects have ever been observed at any reasonable dosage up to and over 3% GHK-Cu.
