Astaxanthin is an oral antioxidant found in Salomon and krill has an excellent natural sun block property.

I take this as part of my anti-aging regimen to help prevent cataracts amongst a slew of other good things. It is a very powerful anti-oxidant that gives a flamingo its pink color - nature's sunblock... Cool

Does the Astaxanthin have to be applied to the skin to offer sun protection?

Here is a moisturizing cream with astaxanthin although it is low on the ingredients list.
..............

This post was drastically shortened since it was mainly ad copy for a product.

Dr P - Is there any published proof in scientific journals of the following statements about this product?

* supports healthy, normal inflammatory states
* helping to protect from UV sun rays
* restoring collagen and elastin integrity
* reducing blemishes
* anti - wrinkle activity, particularly around the eyes, on an all natural basis

I don't know about topical application. It's orally bioactive sunblock

Thanks Sage.
My skin is so oily in the summer there is no way that I can use a moisturizer.

Amipana,
If it is the pink pigment in flamingo and salmon, how does it orally protect against the sun? Similar to our melanin. Melanin can't protect us from the sun if we ingest it.

Astaxanthin is found in red micro algae that when ingested gives flamingos their pretty pink color... Love...their favorite food.

In humans, it acts as a "free radical sponge" when ingested absorbing damage caused from UV rays. It will not prevent the skin from tanning, so a sunblock applied topically is needed. But it acts as a very powerful anti-oxidant that Dr. Pickart talks about that addresses free radical damage caused from over exposure to the sun.

I take it daily for a variety of reasons, and have yet to turn pink like I flamingo... Laughing
