Another form of copper supplement I see on vitacost is "Copper 9as copper sebecate" or just "Copper Sebacate".
Is this a good form? I am presently taking glycinate amino acid chelate, the correct form. Just wondering about this "sebacate". If it is good, I could get my copper from vitacost with everything else. |

I would stick to the amino acid or peptide copper. I cannot find any good published studies on Copper Sebacate. For three years my collaborators in the Chemistry Dept. at the Univ. of Washington made many copper complexes and I tested these on cells cultures, including human fibroblasts, and on the skin of rats. Many complexes were toxic.
In general, we found that fat-like copper complexes were often toxic to cells and sometimes to the skin. Copper Sebacate is somewhat like the toxic fat-like. The problem is the fat-like copper complexes put too much copper into cells and this can be toxic. Some MSDS sheets mention skin irritation, others say nothing. Copper sebacate is used as a fungicide but this is not very encouraging. There are many claims from companies but I cannot find any good science articles. Sebacic acid is a dicarboxylic acid with structure (HOOC)(CH2)8(COOH), and is naturally occurring. In its pure state it is a white flake or powdered crystal. Many supplement companies are as bad as cosmetic companies in their claims of miracle products. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Dr. Pickart, |
