Dr Pickart:
A few years ago, folic acid was believed to protect against colon cancer. Last year, a study was published which claims that folic acid causes colon cancer. The study claimed that the rate of colon cancer in the US has increased since 1998, when the FDA started to require that folic acid be added ro processed foods. I think that it is the excess consumption of processed foods that is the real cause of the increase in colon cancer rates, not the added folic acid. Several scientists involved with the study admitted to having financial comnnections with pharmaceutical companies. My sister has multiple sclerosis and her doctor prescribes 1mg of folic acid per day for nerve damage, so I am concerned because the people in the study who showed an increase in colon polyps took 1mg of folic acid per day for a few years. What is your opinion about the folic acid/colon cancer connection? |

Diet studies often are wrong because they depend on people's memory.
Do a search on Google and look up studies on folic acid and colon cancer - especially animal studies. |
