Dr, Pickart,I aLready take MSM and Vit. C daily.

I started taking fish oil capsules and ALA.
I couldn't find salmon oil, so I got that. Will that be okay?

Also, any idea how long before I might expect my thin, fragile skin to get stronger from all these supplements?

Thanks for your consideration.

All of the fish oils have omega 3 fats and are good.

It usually takes 2 to 3 months to improve skin.

Thanks so much, Dr. Pickart. I've been reading online about how much fish oils seem to have helped people with acne. Also, an asthma support group where a member said to take fish oils for THIN SKIN from taking prednisone.

I'm just going to rest my skin a while, too. So, feel like I'm going in the right direction.

Thanks again.

Flaxseed oil also has a good repuation.

But take about 4 times the amount of fish oil as flaxseed oil. For example, if you take 4 grams of fish oil, then also take 1 gram of flaxseed oil.

Dr.Pickart,
Just to be sure, are you saying that I need to take BOTH fish oil and flaxseed oil?

Since I prefer flaxseed meal, if I need daily flaxseed oil, I 'll get it from that. Flaxseed meal has the added benefit of fiber!

Thanks!

The salmon oil supplies omega-3 fats.

Flaxseed oil (or borage or primrose oil) supplies a fat that helps produce gamma linolenic acid, another necessary fat.

So take some of both.

Hi Dr Pickart,

I would like to start taking Salmon oil also as I really need to boost my skin.

I have been doing alot of research on the web in terms of the health benefits of Omega 3 and Omega 6.

I am already taking Omega 6 in the form of Evening primrose oil. I am taking 3000mg daily. If I look at the breakdown on the botle, this equates to my daily dosage of Cis-Linoleic Acid (LA)2,190mg and GLA 270mg.

All of the websites seem to direct people to take 1:4 in terms of Omega3:Omega6. I think you are advising to take it the other way around. There are alot of websites mentioning that you must get the balance right between Omega3 and Omega6 in order for the combination to be effective. Seeminlgy overdoing Omega6 can cause serious health problems also.

I want to give my skin the maximum boost that I can give it and would appreciate your advice.

Can you advise how much Salmon Oil (Omega3) I should take if I'm already taking 3000mg Evening Primrose. I'm not really looking for a maintenance dose but really need to give my skin a serious boost.

My daily supplement intake is as follows:

Spirulina 3gm
Vit C 1500mg
MSM 3gm
Evening Primrose 3g
Salmon Oil (Not sure what to use)

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Most of the advice that I read says to use much more omega-3 than omega-6. At least 4 times more omega-3 (like salmon oil).

Here is a very good article on Omega 3 & 6

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/omega-6-000317.htm

I think most people in the western world are not deficient in Omega 6 due to high concentrations of it in our diets.

So for Omega 3 intake, I would need to take 4 times that of my current Omega 6 (Evening Primrose 3 gm), that would mean I have to take 12g Salmon Oil? Surely I would start growing fins with a dose like that!

What dose would you recommend I take for the Evening Primrose? Take it back from 3g to 1g and go with 4g of the Salmon oil? I'm looking to really boost my skin as I've been through the wars with my skin and have heard great things about Salmon oil.

The omega-6 fats are confusing.

The problem is taking in too many omega-6 fats from corn oil and soybean oil. These are inflammatory and the current diet contains too much of these fats. They are not necessarily bad but current diets overuse these.

The fats in primrose oil, borage oil, and flaxseed oil also have omega-6 fats but of a different nature. These produce an anti-inflammatory fat called gamma linolenic acid which is more of an anti-inflammatory fat.

So focus on taking in additional omega-3s - like fish oil - and some of the omega-6 fats from flaxseed, borage, or primrose oil. This is what I mean by a 4 to 1 ratio of supplemented omega-3s to the flaxseed, borage, or primrose oils.

Look at

I take Cod Liver oil and Primrose oil, but also a supplement called soy Lecithin. It was recommended to me, but with few details besides "it helps with skin repair." I was wondering if you have heard of about Lecithin helping with skin? It is made from soy, so maybe it contributes Omega-6 fats?

Tessa,
Cod Liver Oil is an Omega 3, but is enriched with Vitamin D (a good thing) done specificaly for the benefit of those living in colder/darker climates. It also has a natural Vit A, which has become controversial.
I was recently asked by my doctor to revert to fish oil capsules instead.

Thank you Sirius,
Do you know why Vit A has become controversial? I used to take it in addition to my other supplements, but I stopped when I started taking Cod Liver Oil. I am Canadian, and I know a lot of east coasters who will swear that a spoonful of cod liver oil every day since childhood is the answer to everything WinkThank goodness for gelatin pills!

It has been found that Vit A, in high doses, accumulates in fats. Thus, it isnt flushed out of the human system quickly and toxic levels are easier reached.
Vit A was the darling of nutritionists during the 90's. It wasn't until fairly recently over dose was found to aid in the formations of certain cancers.
Very few pwople these days, observing a reasonably health diet, require Vit A supplamentation

Interesting. I think I will continue to take the cod liver oil, but looks like I won't be needing the Vit A capsules again!

I've recently discovered Carlson's Norwegian Cod Liver Oil in a bottle at Whole Foods. You can get it lemon flavored. I was surprised that it had a clean, fresh flavor. I use it with olive oil on salads and even add a teaspoon to yogurt and fresh fruit. I had tried fish oil capsules and they always stank to high heaven. They probably were rancid. I keep the bottle of oil in the fridge.

I don't eat meat or poultry, eating fish two-four times per week, usually salmon. So I imagine I am getting my omega 3s. However, I don't eat corn or soy in any form, except for the occasional organic cornbread (most corn and soy is genetically modified). So I wonder if I am deficient in omega 6.

I've been taking fish oils for about 5 weeks. I don't expect major differences in my skin's fragility or strength yet. Just logging this in for now.

ALso, I'm not being allowed to reply to the skin rolling thread in the Scar Reduction forum. Why not?

thanks,

Also take some flaxseed oil. The combination of this and the fish oils works best.

As for posting problems, we don't know why. The Forum Software is put together by another group and there are some glitches in the system.
