Combination blue (415 nm) and red (633 nm) LED phototherapy in the treatment of mild to severe acne vulgaris. Goldberg DJ, Russell BA. Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York/New Jersey, and Department of Dermatology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY 10022, USA. drdavidgoldberg@skinandlasers.com BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Acne vulgaris represents both a challenge to the treating dermatologist and a major concern for the patient. Conventional treatments have proved inconsistent with often unacceptable side effects and high rates of recurrence. Non-thermal, non-laser, phototherapy for acne with a combination of blue and red light has recently attracted attention. The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of this combination phototherapy. METHODS: Twenty-four subjects, Fitzpatrick skin types II-V, with mild to severe symmetric facial acne vulgaris were recruited for the study. Subjects were well matched at baseline in terms of both age and duration of acne. Subjects were treated over eight sessions, two per week 3 days apart, alternating between 415 nm blue light (20 minutes/session, 48 J/cm2) and 633 nm red light (20 minutes/session, 96 J/cm2) from a light-emitting diode (LED)-based therapy system. Patients received a mild microdermabrasion before each session. Acne was assessed at baseline and at weeks 2, 4, 8 and 12. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients completed the trial. A mean reduction in lesion count was observed at all follow-up points. At the 4-week follow-up, the mean lesion count reduction was significant at 46% (p=0.001). At the 12-week follow-up, the mean lesion count reduction was also significant at 81% (p=0.001). Patient and dermatologist assessments were similar. Severe acne showed a marginally better response than mild acne. Side effects were minimal and transitory. Comedones did not respond as well as inflammatory lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Combination blue and red LED therapy appears to have excellent potential in the treatment of mild to severe acne. Treatment appears to be both pain- and side effect-free. |

Wow! Look at these studies on LED therapy! Why don't we read/hear more about these skin care methods in the media?

The dermatology units are likely to be much stronger and more expensive.
How well the cheaper units would work is a good question. One alternative would be a brief exposure of your face to outdoor sunlight for about 15 minutes a day. In cold climates, acne usually decreases in the sunnier months. |

I purchased this device last week.
I know the home version won't work nearly as fast, but if it works at all, I'll be happy. This message has been edited. Last edited by: katherinesmith, |

Hi,
I had seen a DPL light on "Makeup Artists Choice" which costs $349.00. Has anyone used this light and know how it may rate to the less expensive models. |

I bought DPL light therapy in September 2007. I am very happy with the results and saw improvements in the first week of use. I do recommend you to buy it(you will not regret it especially during winter time), however, I found that the infrared sauna works much better. I simply could not beleive the difference it made to my skin and not only on the face
One day a week I spent about 30-40 minutes( 20 minutes in dry fin sauna and 20 mins in infrared sauna), and I see great improvement. I beleive it would do more if I spent 10-15 mins a day in sauna, but in this case I would have to buy infrared sauna and have it at home. That is ideal, if you can do that - go for it!!! I feel much better after sauna, I sleep like a baby after that. I lost weight, I feel much more energized...Skin biology rpoducts, 8 glasses of water a day, healthy diet, whole food supplements, juicing, exercising three times a week, rebounding every day for 10 minutes, and of course MSM, vit C, and Omega 3 --these all is the answer for me for looking good and feeling healthy!!! |

It's called DPL light therapy ( or something like that). I bought it from one of the Dr.Pickart's re-sellers:
http://www.ncnproskincare.com/skin-care-products/exfoliate/photofacial.html Nanci had the best price, it was $299 for this unit in September. Good luck! |

A question for Dr. Pickart, or for those who use SRCPs and retin a:
I use SRCPs and Retin a,the last one 7 months a year: do you think I can use the DPL Therapy (I'm very interested in it), here http://www.ncnproskincare.com/skin-care-products/exfoliate/photofacial.html even in the period of use of retin a? Many thanks in advance |

I have received several reports from skin clinics about very good results using various types of lights and copper peptides from improving facial skin and for new hair growth.
The lights can actually push more copper peptide into the skin. A $30 light might not work so well, but NCN has been very excited about the light that they sell. |

Dear Nataxa, so, I own the DPL Therapy (the one you have), but, I must say, I havent' still used it because I fear I can affect my skin, considering that I'm a retin a user and I use exfol serum around my eyes ( in te mmorning I use SRCP's). I would like to use it, but I fear any reaction 'cause I use acids. What can you tell me? Do you use any form of acid, together with SRCP's? many thanks, AM |

Hi Contin,
I don't have time to do 9 min sessions in the morning, so I do it only in the evening for 18 mins. I don't use acid in the morning either, so I am safe to do DPL in the evening. However, right after the therapy, I use lacsal overnight. I remember I have read somewhere that you can not use acid right before the therapy, because you can burn your skin, the same I think with retin a... Hope it helps! |

Dear nataxa,
many thanks for your reply. I also contacted Nanci, from the site where I bought the DPL therapy: she is really very kind and helpful and she told me the same you said. So, I feel quiet. I will let you now my results. Thank you again, AM |

The dpl is a good alternative to pricy saloon treatments like OMNILUX.
I have a dpl device and i'ts a good product. It's stable and have dual nanometers 630 and 820. (we cannot see the 820nm but if you look via a digital camera u'll see!) the higher nm. the deeper the light goes, with less energy..safe. Light is crucial to maintain a healthy skin. (i think that even harmful uva 300-400nm. is a good trigger in small doses). Uva is the worse you can expose your skin to..Be careful. Use a good sunscreen spf 30 all day, the beneficial radiation goes below the sunscreen anyway..stay in the shadow if you can. a tanned skin is a sign of damage in the dermis, remember that! Go for infrared light and DPL in resonable doses. a balance is the key. skincare nerd, want to know everything!! |

Thanks Eniac for reporting your positive experience.
Which kind of balance and which type of doses would you suggest? |

LED light, both red and blue wavelengths, have been helpful for skin improvements and tissue healing, and many studies including some done by NASA have demonstrated effects. The trick is sometimes figuring out which wavelength (colour) is best for your skin. To address photoaging and rosacea, usually red is best. Blue can be a problem for rosacea. Acne can respond to red, blue or both; and be exacerbated by one or either as well.
Many internet sellers, including eBay sellers, of LED light units for skin, use copied photos from LASER treatment websites. I recognize the photos on the ad on the site for the first post on this thread (by Nataxa). LED light therapy on its own WILL NOT have the kind of results shown in those photos. Those photos are from LASER treatments which involved heat damaging the lower layers of skin, stimulating a healing response. Cooking of the structural proteins. Not a healthy approach. SRCPs and LED light are very complementary, but it will be the SRCPs which have the most profound effect on wrinkles. |
